Cabel George Layne, 95, of Salem, Virginia passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2013. Cabel was born in Pittsylvania County, a son of the late Walter and Addie Layne. Along with his parents he was predeceased by his brothers, John, Thelbert, Wilson, Roy and Dave; sisters Ann, Fannie, Libby, Pearl, and Margaret. Cabel proudly served as a sergeant in the US army, and led his countrymen as part of the Normandy Invasion and the Northern France Campaign, earning many medals, awards and accolades for his leadership, meritorious service, and strength. After the war, he worked as a conductor on the N&W Railroad where he was highly regarded as a diligent worker and friend, and he was an active member of the N.A.R.V.R.E He was a Mason, a hunter, and a highly regarded gardener. He was honored by the Salem Masonic Taylor Lodge as a 50-year member. Most importantly, Cabel was a friend to everyone he met, a kind spirit and a true gentleman, and a role-model to all those who knew him. Cabel leaves behind his wife, Alieen Layne; a son, David Layne; a daughter, Linda Layne Mallory and her husband John; grandchildren, Matthew Mallory, Melissa Mallory, and Meredith Kozera and her husband Alex; two brothers-in-law, Tom Beason, and William Beason and two sisters-in-law, Ella Layne, and Ellenner Layne. The family will receive friends on Monday evening, December 23, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem, and a funeral service to honor the life of Cabel George Layne, will take place on Tuesday December 24, 2013 at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the funeral home, with Rev. Nick Shaffer and Rev. Eddie Strickland officiating, interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem. An online guestbook is available at www.johnmoakey.com.
