Bryant E. Duncan, 87, of Salem, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2019. He was born in New Castle, a son of the late Esse and Ida Duncan and had been an area resident all of his life. A devout Christian man, he proudly served his country during the Korean War in U.S. Marine Corps. He was employed for many years as a machinist at General Electric before retiring, held a deep passion for hunting and fishing and was an avid Civil War historian. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard S. Duncan and wife Frances, a step-daughter, Tammy Salmon, his former spouse, Shirley June Duncan, and a brother-in-law, Deal Lipes. He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Joyce Spangler Duncan; step-son, Dewey Spangler, Jr.; sister, Kernell Lipes; two grandchildren, Jacob and Ben Salmon; nieces, Daphne McDaniel and husband Sonny, Cindy Johnson and husband Calvin, Barbara Lipes and Winnie Walters; nephews, Richard and Wayne Duncan; son-in-law, Michael Salmon. Funeral services will be held at 2PM, Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at the Chapel of John M. Oakey & Son, Salem. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM, Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in his memory may be made to Disabled American Veterans Chapter 3, 2381 Roanoke Blvd. Salem, VA 24153.
