Brenda Lee 'Granny' Smith

Brenda Granny Smith, age 72, of Salem, Va. went to be with the Lord on Friday, November 25, 2018 at her home. She was born on Thursday, September 26, 1946 to the late Casper John and Rachel Stanley Hayes. Brenda retired from the Roanoke County Treasurers Office as the Chief Deputy Treasurer. She was a longtime Hokie fan, and season ticket holder for Virginia Tech Football and enjoyed Hokie Basketball. She had a love of reading and being outdoors. Her passion was working in her gardens or manicuring the lawn. Brenda dearly loved her canine companion, Macie. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by one brother, Rodney Hayes. Brenda is survived by her children, Randy Smith and wife, Kim and daughter Samantha, Kevin Smith and daughter, Sarah Smith, and Sherri Phipps and husband, Vaughn and daughter, Harliee; two brothers, David and Jerry Hayes; she also leaves behind her wonderful friends especially her Hokie Nation friends, her Bridge group, and her Canasta group. A funeral service to celebrate Brendas life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem with Pastor Stephen Parker officiating. Burial will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem.
