Birt C. Skip Huffman, Jr. died peacefully at home Thursday, April 5th, 2018. He now forever resides with his Lord. Skip was born March 10, 1950, son of the late Birt Clayburn Huffman, Sr. and Bertha Gibson Huffman. He was a graduate of Andrew Lewis High School and attended Virginia Western Community College. Skip was a retired Construction Administrator and shareholder with Ascent Engineering Group in Roanoke. He loved his work and was proud of what the business accomplished. After retirement Skip continued to share his 43 years of experience and knowledge overseeing construction of a new home for his daughter and son-in-law. He respected those who worked in all of the construction trades and was widely respected in return. In addition to his parents, Skip was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Jessica Suzanne Huffman, and mother-in-law, Gerry Reynolds Cook. Skip is survived by his wife, Barbara Boothe Huffman; daughter, Leslie Huffman Bauguss and husband, David; son, Clay Christopher Huffman and wife, Kristen; grandsons, Noah Jasper Huffman and Wyatt Edward Huffman, all of Salem; father-in-law, Donald R. Cook and lady, Shirley A. Harnsberger; sister, Martha Anne Dyer; and numerous nephews; pups, Penny and Spencer, and horse, Lily. His longtime Saturday golf buddies and special friends include Glen Cassell, Pat Simpson, and Bob Flora. A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 9, 2018 at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem, with Pastors Rick Elmore and Daniel T. Netting officiating. Interment will follow in East Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Skip, an excellent golfer, loved all things Salem, and especially Salem High School Football. Youd find him at Friday night home games no matter the weather. If you knew Skip, youd know that he didnt enjoy dressing up. With that in mind, please come casual and feel free to wear your Salem Spartan colors or Carolina Blue in support of Tarheels basketball.
