Billy Ray (Bill) Hanes, 68 of Salem, passed away on Wednesday, November 2, 2011. He was born on July 4, 1943 in Morehead Kentucky to the late Edgar and Elizabeth Hanes. Mr. Hanes will mostly be remembered from his dedicated and honorable service with the Roanoke City Fire Department, as he retired with 25 years of service. Along with his service to the citizens of Roanoke, he also proudly served his country in the United States Navy after graduating high school. He will always be remembered for his dedication and love to his family, and friends, as well as someone that would help anyone in a time of need. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hanes was preceded in death by four sisters, Pearl, Carolyn, Margie, and Mary. Loved ones remaining to cherish his memory include his wife of 46 years, Elaine Hanes; son, Michael Hanes; daughter, Lori Hanes; two brothers, Kenneth Hanes, & wife Phoebe, and Denvil Hanes, & wife Violet, granddaughter, Ashley Hanes, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive. The family will receive friends on Friday, November 4, 2011 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral home in Salem.
