Betty Jacqueline Goodwin Evans, 82, passed peacefully from this life into new life with her Heavenly Father on Friday, November 12, 2010. She had been away from her Salem, VA. home since 2007. Most recently, she resided at Chatham Health and Rehab Center in Chatham, VA. Betty was born at home in Roanoke County to Christine J. Goodwin and Fred Goodwin on October 27,1928. She grew up to become a devoted and loving mother and homemaker. She also assisted with the family businesses, Gentry's Studio and Goodwin's Motel. Betty enjoyed her Garden Club, reading, camping, cooking, and spending her time with family and pets. She knew how to turn a house into a home. Until her decline in health she belonged to Salem Baptist Church. Surviving are her daughters Deborah Gentry McCulloch (Thad) of Fort Wayne, IN and Cynthia Gentry Wickham (Kevin) of Penhook, VA; grandchildren Ashley McCulloch Zimmerman (Brian) of Sarasota, FL and Hunter Wickham of Penhook, VA.; great grandchild Camper D. Zimmerman also of Sarasota, FL; one brother, James E. Goodwin of Roanoke, VA; numerous loved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Frederick Evans. A Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at Sherwood Memorial Park with visitation from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 15, 2010 at John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home in Salem, VA In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the SPCA or to the Salem Rescue Mission.
