Betsy Ross Clark Moir was born on November 10, 1933. She grew up in Stuart, Virginia. Betsy closed her weary eyes to rest on May 4, 2014 after a 17 year battle with ovarian cancer. An avid golfer and sports fan, Betsy was the coach behind the coach to her devoted husband of 60 years, Charles Moir. Betsy was preceded in death by her parents, Edward Lybrook (Lyle) Clark and Lucy Penn Ross Clark; and her brother Edward Lybrook (Lyle Jr.) Clark, Jr. A graduate of Fairfax Hall, Betsy was an Apple Blossom Festival Princess and a 43 year member of the ladies golf association at Hidden Valley Country Club. She enjoyed lifelong friendships with basketball players and their families from Mount Airy, NC, Roanoke College, Tulane University, and Virginia Tech. Her corn pudding and cookies were the highlights of all team dinners. She enjoyed painting, needlepoint, cross stitching, knitting, and scrapbooking, but her passion was golf. She believed you should never waste the opportunity to spend a beautiful day on the golf coursethe housework could wait for rainy days. During her 80 years she played the game she loved in 26 different states and three countries. She was proud of her collection of nickels, dimes, and quarters she had won off competitors through the years with her sharp putting. Betsy is loved and cherished by her husband, Charles; sons, Bobby and Page and his wife, Jody; and granddaughters, Anna Ross and Sara Charles. The family will receive friends on Friday, May 9, 2014 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem.
