Betsy Ferguson Hurley, 46, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 10, 2014 after a long, hard fight with ALS. She graduated from Roanoke College in 1989 and then went on to teach at South Salem Elementary School for 22 years. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Eugene and Frances Ferguson and Frazier and Kathleen Garst; and uncles, Jack and Banks Garst. Her surviving family includes her husband, Bruce Hurley; children, Blake and AnnE Hurley; parents, Billy and Sarah Ferguson; sister, Stacey Ferguson Frye and husband, Buddy; nephews, Andrew, Owen, and Will Frye; aunts and uncles, Shirley Garst, Frank Garst, Nancy and James (Pete) Mowles, Sandra and Bill McGalliard, David (Toby) and Carol Garst, Barbara Garst, and Walter Garst; and many cousins and dear friends. The family would like to thank the South Salem Elementary School and everyone else who provided meals, donations, flowers, and visits. A period of visitation will be held on Sunday, January 12, 2014 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem. A funeral service will then be held on Monday, January 13, 2014 at 2 p.m., also in the chapel. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The Rev. Janet Chisom will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the ALS Association DC/MD/VA Chapter at 7507 Standish Place in Rockville, MD 20855 or to Good Samaritan Hospice at 2408 Electric Rd in Roanoke, VA 24018.
