Bernice Evelyn Kanode Newcomb, 89, of Salem, died Saturday January 15, 2011 following a lengthy illness. She was born in Salem, Virginia and lived in Salem most of her life. She was a devoted mother, home maker and a devout member of the Salem Baptist Church for her entire adult life. She traveled extensively during her life eventually visiting all 50 states. She was also a member of the Salem bird club, garden club and enjoyed painting. She was preceded in death by her husbands, George Wesley Kanode and William Edward Newcomb. She is survived by three children, Thomas Wesley Kanode and wife of Rockwall Texas, Robert Lewis Kanode and wife of Leander Texas and daughter, Anne Newcomb Slusher of Roanoke Virginia; 3 grandchildren Steven, Elizabeth and Kelli Kanode and many close family and other friends throughout Salem and the State of Virginia. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Wednesday evening at John M. Oakey and Son, Salem. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 am Thursday, January 20, 2011 at Salem Baptist Church with Rev. Everett Kier officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwoood Memorial Park. Arrangements are by John M. Oakey & Son, Salem, VA 540-389-5441.
