Bernard Eugene Troutman, 85, of Roanoke, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, July 15, 2013. He was born on May 9, 1928 to the late Earnest and Margaret H. Troutman, in Glade Spring, VA. He proudly served his country during the Korean War, in the United States Army. He was a former chief and charter member of the Glade Spring Volunteer Fire Department, and extended his training to become a paid firefighter for the city of Salem, where he retired after 20 plus years of service. He was an avid railroad fan, and a member of the National Railroad Historical Society; (NRHS). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Wanda Lee Troutman. Family remaining to cherish his memory includes his son, Bernard L. Troutman and wife, Sherrie, of Fincastle, VA; sister, Betty Shoun, of Meadowview, VA, and his grandchildren, Christopher Troutman, of Charleston, SC, and Holly Troutman, of Nashville, TN. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 from 6 until 8 p.m. at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Entombment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Gardens, where military rights will be conducted. The family would like to offer a special thank you to Krystal Wallace, for the love and care given to Mr. Troutman during his illness, as well as the staff of Good Samaritan Hospice.
