Bernard Thomas Deaner, 79, of Salem, VA, passed away on Sunday, December 25, 2011. He was born in Tams, WV, a son of the late Charlie A. and Dorothy Barlow Deaner, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army having faithfully served during the Korean War. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 18 years, Anne Miller Deaner; a brother, Charles McCay Deaner; and his stepmother, Frances Griffitts Deaner. His surviving family includes a son, Josh Lester and his wife, Michele; daughter, Patti Barnard and her husband, Frank; brother, Douglas M. Deaner; sisters-in-law, Sally Wood Deaner and Linda Stiltner Deaner; two grandsons, Andrew Lester and his wife, Sydney, and Jeremy Lester; granddaughter, Hannah Lester; nieces, Janet L. Deaner, Dawn Missy Eberl, and Debbie Norton; nephew, Scott Deaner; great-nieces, Holly Norton and Jadyn Deaner; great-nephews, Ricky L. Norton, Jakeb Deaner, and Case Deaner; special cousin, Shelby Deaner, Jr. and his wife, Carol; as well as many other cousins and friends. Bernard will be missed by his family and all who knew him, for he was a very special person to all. The family would like to thank Carrie Chittum and Elva Miller for their unending friendship to Bernie. A graveside memorial service with military honors will be held on Friday, January 6, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Old Dominion Memorial Gardens in Roanoke. The Rev. Tom Clay will officiate.
