Benton F. Higgs, Sr., 87, of Salem, peacefully passed away on Thursday, August 26, 2010. He served our country in the U.S. Army during both World War II and the Korean Conflict and later became a member of the DAV. He was also employed with Valleydale Meat Packers for over 20 years. Preceding him in death was his wife of 63 years, Lois Genevieve Higgs; and a sister, Hazel H. Gearhart. His surviving family includes his children, Benton F. Higgs, Jr. and wife, Judy, of Fishersville, Thomas E. Higgs and wife, June Lee, of Salem, Carolyn H. McDaniels, of Salem, who was also his caregiver for many years, Richard A. Higgs and wife, Robin, of Goodview, and Beverly H. Reed and husband, Sonny, of Salem; sisters, Jane H. Pendleton of Roanoke and Phyllis H. Chapman of Raleigh, NC; 7 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 28, 2010 at 4 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem. A period of visitation will follow until 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the Salem Rescue Squad at 201 South Broad Street in Salem, VA 24153.
