Bennett Gill "B.G." Edwards Jr.

Bennett Gill B.G. Edwards, Jr., 76, of Salem, Va., passed away late Sunday, August 19, 2018. He was born December 17, 1941, in Henderson, N.C. to the late Bennett Gill Edwards, Sr. and Mattie Edwards. He was also preceded by death by his brother, Charlie Edwards; and nephew, Tony Wilson. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Betty O. Edwards; daughter, Cathy Tabor (Butch); sons, Gill and Keith Edwards; sisters, Brenda Oha (Ronald), Barbara Wilson, Diane Medlin (Robert), and Martha Edwards; brother, Michael Edwards (Sandy); sister-in-law, Sandra Edwards; lots of nieces and nephews; grandchildren, Angie, Jason, Josh, Danielle, Alan, Drew, and Victoria; mother-in-law, Mildred Owens; and brother-in-law, James Owens. B.G. was a professional truck driver for Overnite Transportation which later became UPS Freight. He retired after over 33 years in 2003 and then worked part time with Conway Trucking. He was in truck driving championships locally, statewide, and nationally, and has won many trophies and awards. He was also a board member of the Mid Atlantic Professional Truck Driving Association to benefit the Make-A-Wish charity. He was a wonderful blessing and has touched many lives by his charm and wit. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 24, 2018, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. The service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 25, 2018, in the funeral homes chapel. Burial will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. Online condolences may be expressed at www.johnmoakey.com.
