Benjamin Morgan Hancock, 89, of Salem, VA went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 8, 2016. He was born April 6, 1927 in Franklin County, VA son of the late, William and Mary Montgomery Hancock. He was preceded in death by wives, Virginia Hancock and Janie Hancock; son, Wayne Hancock; mother-in-law, Mae Cundiff; granddaughter, Amy Hancock; son-in-law, Kevin Manning; brother, Jack Hancock; and nephews, Kevin Hancock and Michael Sloane. Benjamin retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad with 44 years of service. He was a US Army Veteran and a member of CommUNITY Church. He was a master of all trades and was always helping someone. He was always smiling and everyone that met him liked him. His nickname on the railroad was Gentle Ben. Benjamin was a very patient man and he loved to dance, wood working, travel, church trips and family vacations. His family feels very fortunate to have had him in their lives and he loved his family very much. He is survived by his son, Glenn Hancock and fiance, Barbara Griffith; daughters, Darlene Hancock and Sandra Hancock Manning; granddaughter, Amber Dawn Hancock who had a very special relationship with her grampa, and her significant other, Blake Boone; also surviving are his sister, Elaine Hancock; Brothers, Zane Hancock and wife, Peggy, Dexter Hancock and wife, Linda; sisters-in-law, Mary Hancock and Marie Sloane; and all his many nephews and cousins. The family would like to thank Carilion Home Health Care, Carilion Hospice, Brenda and Matt Sloane for their care of Benjamin. The family also extends a special thank you to a very special person, Evelyn Taylor, his caregiver. He called her The Woman and we cant explain how much she did for our father and our family. The family will receive friends Monday, April 11, 2016 from 6 to 8 pm at John M. Oakey and Son, Salem. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 am Tuesday, April 12 at the chapel of John M. Oakey and son with Pastor Dan Carawan officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Roanoke.First Visitation
