Belva Jeanne Matherly, 64, of Roanoke, passed away on Saturday, June 9, 2012. She was a secretary for many years for the psychology and biology departments at Roanoke College and also taught pharmacy tech classes at National Business College. She was also very active with the AMVET Auxiliary, even serving as the state department president at one time. Preceding her in death was her father, James Thomas Combs, Jr.; and brother, James Alton Combs, Sr. Her surviving family includes her mother, Frances Louise Combs; loving companion of more than 20 years, Albert Ruthenberg; children, Melinda Matherly Collins and husband, Scott, Sr. and Keith B. Matherly and wife, Katherine; brothers, Stephen F. Combs and wife, Stephanie, and Charles H. Combs; sister, Chandra A. Combs; grandchildren, Scott A. Collins, Jr., Ryann J. Collins, Allison H. Collins, and Caleb M. Matherly; and numerous other family members. The family will receive friends on Monday, June 11, 2012 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Paul Henrickson officiating.
