Barbara Benton Garrett

Barbara Benton Garrett, 80, of Anthem, Ariz. and formerly of Salem, Va., passed away on Monday, January 14, 2019. She was born on August 12, 1938, in Portsmouth, Va. and later moved to Salem, Va., a place she always called home, even after she moved away. Barbara was preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, Morris A. Garrett; mother, Nancy Nottingham; brother, Buddy Benton; and brother-in-law, Jimmy Holliman. She is survived by her son, Gary Garrett and his fiance, Trisha Larsen, of Anthem, Ariz.; daughter, Deanna Garrett-Ostermiller and her wife, Jennifer Garrett-Ostermiller, of Huntington, Vt.; granddaughters, Claire and Molly Garrett of Anthem, Ariz.; sister, Doris Holliman; sister and brother-in-law, Rose and Joe Cater; brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Ginnie Benton; numerous nieces and a nephew; and many long-time friends. The family wishes to acknowledge special thanks to Doreen Stinger who provided daily care for Barbara with compassion and friendship over the past two years. Barbara was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister and will be greatly missed. She was fiercely independent and strong until the end and loved her children and grandchildren immensely. Visitation hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, January 21, 2019, at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, Va. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 22, 2019, in the funeral homes chapel. Interment will be private.
