Arlene Hammond Gaking

Arlene Hammond Gaking, age 82, of Mount Pleasant, SC, formerly of Roanoke, VA went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 30, 2018. Born on Monday, July 15, 1935 to the late Mansfield and Ruby Underwood Hammond. Arlene was very active with Meals on Wheels, and was noted for being very fashionable. She got the opportunity to live in Bermuda when she was younger; while there, she was a dance instructor at Arthur Murray, later in life she worked for Bonomos Clothier. Arlene accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and was active in her church. She was known as a loving: wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by two brothers, Nathan Godfrey Hammond, Mansfield Hammond, Jr., and one sister, Mable Leigh Harrison. Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 63 years, Gary Neil Gaking; son, Mark Gaking and wife Julie; daughter, Penelope Anne Gaking; grandchildren, Morgan Gaking Miner and husband Thomas, Susanna Nicole Gaking, Peter Reece Gaking, and Chase Coleman Englund; one great grandson Tripp Miner; one brother, Ronald Hammond; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. A funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, VA with Pastor Tim Martin officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Sunrise Burial Park in Fairlawn, VA with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
