Annie Elizabeth Howell Duffy, 85, of Salem, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, February 7, 2013. Ann was predeceased by her husband, Baxter Turner Duffy of Salem, Virginia; her parents, (Minnie) Irene Long Howell and Jimmy Robertson Howell; and her brother, John James Howell of North Hampton County, North Carolina. Ann was born in Seaboard, North Hampton County. She graduated from Seaboard High School, and then went on to Kings Business College for her Secretarial degree. She moved to Richmond, Virginia to work at Richmond Polytechnical Institute, a division of William and Mary College, as Secretary to the Dean of Students. There she met her husband, Baxter, who was President of the Student Body. Following their marriage, they lived in Alexandria, Virginia, and then in Winchester. They then briefly moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut, followed by Bronxville, New York, and settled in Maywood, New Jersey. Upon retirement, they moved to Salem. Ann was active in her church wherever she lived. She enjoyed children all her life and participated in the Nursery Ministry, teaching Sunday School for toddlers and preschoolers. She also sang in the choir most of her adult life. She was a great cook and loved entertaining as well. At Christmas, friends and family will remember getting cards from A, B, C, D, E Duffys. Annie leaves behind her three children and their families, Carla Irene Duffy Wyllie and Stephen Wyllie of Niskayuna, NY, Douglas Chapman Duffy and Nancy Daniel Duffy of Salem, and Baxter Evan Duffy and Donna Lee Kramer Duffy of Bloomingdale, NJ; grandchildren, Hannah Elizabeth Wyllie Santiago and Michael Santiago of Bronxville, NY, Robert Baxter Wyllie of Schenectady, NY, Lauren Johanna Duffy, Sarah Elizabeth Duffy, Paul Chapman Duffy, and Douglas Turner Duffy; step-grandchildren, Matthew Foster Burton, Jr. and Daniel Burnett Burton; great-grandchildren, Lucy Irene Santiago and Garrett Stephen Santiago; sister and brother, Eula Howell Glover and George Willard Howell; many nieces and nephews; and among her many friends, Jennifer Hamdan. A family gathering will be held at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem on Monday, February 11, 2013 from 6 pm to 8 pm.
