Mrs. Anne L. Steele, 92, of Salem, passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2016. Anne was born to the late Ralph and Ruby Lindauer on November 27, 1923 in Middletown, OH. She graduated from Middletown High School in 1941. After graduation, she held several clerical, sales, and waitress positions in Dayton, Middletown, and Cincinnati, OH. In 1953, she married William Steele, a career Marine who was stationed in Cincinnati at the time and became a military spouse. For the next 23 years she moved from duty station to duty station, with her husband, and without her husband during a few unaccompanied duty tours. With each move she created a new loving home for her family and made new everlasting friendships with other families. In her earlier years as a military spouse she held various retail sales positions while she raised their family. Upon her husbands retirement from the Marine Corps, she and her husband moved to Albuquerque, NM. He was employed and later retired from the New Mexico public school system. After that retirement, she and her husband moved to Salem, VA to be near their children and grandchildren. She enjoyed her nomad lifestyle and cherished all the friendships she had made, both military and civilian. She was an avid reader of books from regular print to large print to finally talking books. She is preceded in death by her son, Alan R. Steele; daughter, Shelley Counts; son-in-law, Robert D. Counts, and grandson, Chad Counts. Surviving is her husband, William W. Steele; daughter, Barbara Hall and husband, Richard; grandchildren, Sean and Michelle Hall, Hollie Flynn, and four great-grandchildren. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the Good Samaritan Hospice staff for their dedicated, dignified, and devoted assistance they provided Mrs. Steele. Per Annes request no services to be held. At a later time, family and friends will celebrate her life and the scattering of the ashes. Online condolences may be expressed at www.johnmoakey.com. The Steele family is being served by John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home and Crematory, Salem, 540-389-5441.
