Amelia Hough Gerner, 71, passed away on May 30, 2023, after fighting cancer for over 20 years. Survivors include her daughters, Amy Isley (Miller) and Morgen Meadows; granddaughters, Amelia and Olivia Isley; brothers, Frank (Karen), Jay (Laura), and Andy (Judy) Hough; and stepchildren, Leah (Mack), Lauren (Duffy), Eric (Amber), and Lindsey Gerner. She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond Franklin Hough Jr., and Betty Jane Litts Hough; husbands, Robert Sparky Journell III and Robert Rob Gerner; as well as childhood friend and soulmate, Johnny Rutherford. Amelia graduated from Andrew Lewis High School and Roanoke College. She taught elementary school for 24 years in Roanoke County before moving to Smith Mountain Lake. There she worked as a residential Realtor for Berkshire Hathaway until 2022. She loved her lake home and regularly entertained friends and relatives, creating a special bedroom for her granddaughters. She reached her goal of seeing her youngest granddaughter Olivia graduate from Virginia Tech in May 2023. Her love of water extended to Amelias love of beaches. She went to the beach whenever she could, especially with her dear friends the YaYas and the Hill group, starting with Garden City, SC, then expanding to St. John, Woods Hole on Cape Cod, and Floridas Bonita Springs. She also was a devoted runner, then walker, and enjoyed skiing trips with her family. She was fantastic company and had countless friends throughout her life, many dating back to elementary school. The family would like to thank: all friends and family that assisted with Amelias treatments; specifically, Dr. William Grosh, UVA Oncologist for 20 years of care; all staff members at UVA Medical Center; Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston; VCU Medical Center; Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital; and finally, Lewis Gale Medical Center. A memorial service for Amelia will be held at 11 a.m. on June 10 at St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Salem, Virginia, with Reverend Willis Logan officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Amelia Gerners name be made to any of the medical centers above or to a charity of the senders choice. John M.
