Allan Benton Dowdy passed away unexpectantly on October 15th at the age of 83. He was born August 27th, 1929 in Giles County, Virginia, and was the son of the late Charles Arthur and Rebecca Mae Dowdy. He was predeceased by his daughter, Karen D. Schmidt, grandson Bradley A. Schmidt, and brother Norman W. Dowdy. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nancy Link Dowdy, daughter Susan D. Parr (Don), grandsons Justin M. Schmidt (girlfriend Kathleen OMeara) and Brendan A. Parr, granddaughter Carlyn S. Parr, brothers Joe Bud Dowdy (Nancy) and Peyton Dowdy, several cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends. Allan loved people, loved to tell a good joke or story, and would never hesitate to strike up conversations with total strangers. His outgoing personality provided for a successful sales career where he retired after 31 years from American General Insurance Company. After retiring, his love of people allowed him to transition to a new career in the funeral business where his welcoming smile and compassionate words provided comfort to those in need. Allan ended his career at John M. Oakey and son. He was a gifted musician playing in several bands across Virginia for many years. He also enjoyed playing music for residents of several area nursing homes. His last years were devoted to the care of his family whom he cherished deeply.
