Obituary for William Furman Mattox Jr.

William Furman Mattox, Jr., 79, of Salem, VA passed away Saturday, December 14, 2019. He was born January 20, 1940 in Roanoke, VA a son of the late William Furman Mattox, Sr. and Virginia Dyer Mattox.

Mr. Mattox was member and Deacon of North Roanoke Baptist Church where he also enjoyed traveling on mission trips. He also previously was a member and Deacon of Virginia Heights Baptist Church. Furman lived a life that truly honored God. He loved his family and always put them first and he was always helping others. He enjoyed being with his family, friends attending parties, church functions and sporting events. He retired after 32 years’ service from Norfolk and Southern Railroad. He was the founder and former owner of Mattox Sealer Company for over 45 years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Connie Moulse Mattox; sons and daughter-in-law, Tim and Sherry Mattox and Jason Mattox; brother and sister-in-law, Michael J. and Pal Mattox; sister, Ginger M. Lebow; grandchildren, Shelly and Shawn Allie, Tilly and Sam Wentzel, Molly and John Kernes, Emily Mattox and fiancé, Brandon, Chloe Mattox, Haley Mattox and Austin Mattox; great-grandchildren, Lyla Hancock, Clara Hancock, Zephy Hancock and Nemo Allie; and numerous other family and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 17, 2019 at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. Funeral services to celebrate Furman’s life will be held on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at 11 a.m. at North Roanoke Baptist Church, 6402 Peters Creek Rd, Roanoke, VA 24019 with Rev. Daniel Palmer and Rev. Darryl Crim officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorial donations be made in Furman’s name to the Splash Sunday School Class at North Roanoke Baptist Church 6402 Peters Creek Rd, Roanoke, VA 24019.
