Obituary for Trever Aubria "T.A." Carter

Trever Aubria Carter Jr., better known as T.A., passed away on Sunday, December 27, 2020.

He was predeceased by his parents, Trever Aubria Carter Sr. and Pernell Jackson Carter Smith; his sister, Sheri Carter; his brother, Jack Carter; his daughter, Sidney Jay Carter; and his son, Joseph Watson Carter.

T.A. is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Jeanette Watson Carter; his daughter, Treva Jean Carter (fiancé Alan); his son, Edward Paul Carter (Juliette); granddaughter, Amber Miller Mason (daughter, Maggie, and son, Carter); and grandsons, Jeremy Wyatt Carter (wife, Kel, son, Wyatt, and daughter, Millie) and Benjamin Gerald Carter (Melissa). He also leaves behind numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews who called him Colie.

T.A. graduated from Jefferson High School and served in the U.S. Navy at the end of WWII, then earned an architectural degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & University.

After a short time with Hays Seay Mattern & Mattern, T.A. formed the Double T Corporation with T.D. Steele and development partnerships with other businessmen. Under T.A.’s design leadership, the groups developed Crossroads and Tanglewood Malls in Roanoke, University Mall in Blacksburg, and Mongoose Junction in St. John, USVI. They also developed Marriott properties in Roanoke and Blacksburg, Hunting Hills Country Club, and residential neighborhoods. He loved his work and visited each of his projects every day while they were under construction.

He also loved traveling with his family and fellow photographers around the world. He and Jeanette introduced many friends and family to St. John, building a second home and spending many vacations there over 30 years.

T.A. was one of the initial believers and contributors to Explore Park. He supported Roanoke College and Virginia Tech, establishing the T.A. Carter Professorship in the College of Architecture. He was a long-time member of the Salem Rotary Club. He gave generous support to aspiring young students and business people in his family and community.

A small private graveside service will be held soon, with a memorial service planned after the pandemic is over.
