Obituary for Thomas "Jack" Tolbert

Thomas “Jack” Tolbert, 85, of Salem, passed away and was reunited with his wife on Sunday, May 9, 2021, from Salem Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born on January 2, 1936, in Saltville, Va., son of the late Rudolph and Margaret Price Tolbert. Jack was known as a selfless person that would assist anyone in need. He was not ashamed, or afraid of hard work, however, he also enjoyed a quiet moment on the front porch with a cold beer in hand. Jack was also known to be very sociable and on occasion, flirtatious, hence the nickname, “Romeo.” He thoroughly enjoyed a good conversation that always included the telling a good joke. He certainly was known for a good sense of humor! When not working, you may have found Jack gardening, or building something, as he enjoyed working with wood. He also enjoyed watching wrestling on TV, playing his guitar, and singing occasionally, but he will be remembered most as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was the family provider, always making sure they were taken care of before himself or others.

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Nancy Sue McNeil Tolbert; brother, George Tolbert; and sisters, Pauline, Bonnie, Jean, and Mary.

Family remaining to cherish his memory includes his daughters, Debbie Spradlin and Crissy Taylor (Scott); grandchildren, Donald Wheeling, Jamie Meador-Clay (Jesse), and Paige Stanley (Zach); great-grandchildren, Colin Maddy, Alex Stanley, and Alyssa Wheeling; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service to honor Jack’s life will be held on Thursday, May 13, 2021, at 2 p.m., at Sherwood Memorial Park, in Salem, with Chaplain Roy Kanode officiating.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making memorial donations, in Jack’s memory, to the American Alzheimer’s Association; 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to the caring staff that assisted Jack during his stay at Salem Health and Rehabilitation Center.
