Obituary for Richard Zirkle "Dick" Hurt

Richard Z. “Dick” Hurt, 90, of Salem, passed away at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital on April 14, 2020.

He was born on September 25, 1929 in Salem, Va. To the late William Wallace and Carrie Pinkard Hurt.

Dick leaves behind his love of his life of 68 years, wife, Marie Harless Hurt; four children, daughter, Bonnie Sabatini (Nick) of Florida, Ronnie Hurt (Sandra) of Vinton, Va, daughter, Pam Smith of Roanoke, Va and son, Sam Hurt of Salem, Va; two sisters, Eva Richardson and Nancy Mowles and brother, Bobby Hurt all of Salem, Va,; grandchildren, Seth, Stephanie, Alli and Sammy; six great-grandchildren, Hayden, Brendyn, Weston, Vonn Richard, Jillian and Cassidy Hope.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Billy and Harold Hurt; and his sister, Peggy Hurt.

Dick proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict as a Radioman. Following his discharge, he worked for 37 faithful years as a lineman / engineer for the Bell System Phone Company prior to retiring. He was known as a very witty, patient, and humble man, who also was very honest and fair. He enjoyed laughing and telling jokes, and certainly loved looking for and finding good deals. Dick loved his family and would take his children on many vacations as well as his grandchildren. He and his wife share many amazing memories that their family will always be able to carry with them.

Honors to respect Dick’s military service and a celebration of his life will be held at a private graveside service.
