Obituary for Richard Leslie Hight

Richard Leslie Hight, 77, of Roanoke, passed away on Tuesday, May 18, 2021, from Salem Health & Rehabilitation Center.
He was born on August 18, 1943, son of the late Basil Duggan and Ruby Finney Hight, in Los Angeles, Calif.
Richard proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was truly a man of many talents and his knowledge of nearly everything was impeccable. He had a very gentle spirit and soft spoken but, he also got his point across when necessary. Richard held numerous positions within several industries during his life, however, he was particularly proud of his gold mining days. Trains, tools, and dining out seemed to be what made him happiest most of the time, except his feline companions. He loved his cats!

Family remaining to cherish his memory includes his wife of 19 years, Adriene Hight, of Roanoke; brother, Frank Kelly (Ellen), of Salem, Ore.; stepson, Matthew Payne (Lauren), of New Jersey; stepdaughter, Lisa Johnson (Ryan), of Mississippi; step-grandchildren, Alex and Harper Johnson, of Mississippi; brothers-in-law, Hal Bedell (Lori), of Tennessee and Joseph Bedell (Debbie), of New Jersey; cousin, Janet Occhiuzzo, of Roanoke; his beloved cat, “CatCat;” and dog’s, Brandy and Cloe.

A celebration of Richard’s life will be conducted on Saturday, May 22, 2021, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, with Pastor Gary Alls officiating.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations in Richard’s memory to the American Alzheimer’s Association.

The family would like to recognize and thank Richard’s cousin, Janet Occhiuzzo, for her love and care she has given over the last several years. You are amazing!

They would also like to thank the caring staff and Administrative team at Salem Health and Rehabilitation Center for their kindness and care during Richard’s stay. You all are deeply appreciated!
