Obituary for Reba Helena Kling

Reba Kling, 87, of Roanoke, Va., gave up her spirit on Thursday, 22, 2022.

She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Ledbetter; mother, Grace Ledbetter; sister, Patty Ledbetter; and brothers, Walter Ledbetter and Daniel Ledbetter.

She is survived by her devoted husband, W. Allen Kling; sisters, Allene Ledbetter Rogers and Frances Ledbetter Edney; children, Deborah Patterson, Vickie Perry, Walter Kling II, and Robert Kling; grandchildren, Christina Perry, Brian Perry, Melissa Patterson, and Katlyn Shutters; and great-grandchildren, Kendrick Shutters, Kallen Shutters, Oliver Perry, Karleigh Shutters, and Elijah Perry.

Reba was born in Hendersonville, N.C., and it was there that she met her husband, W. Allen Kling. They were married on August 25, 1953, in Hendersonville.

After living for a short time in Saint Augustine, Fla., while her husband completed his tour of duty in the US Navy, the young couple moved to Chattanooga, Tenn., where her husband attended university and their four children were born.

Because of her husband’s career, they lived in a number of communities throughout the eastern half of the United States. They retired in 1991, and lived in Rockport, Texas, until 2010 when they moved to Roanoke, Va., to be closer to family.

Reba devoted much of her life to her husband and her children, and was a loving and sharing parent and partner. Her other interests included participating in service organizations and to her church. She was a Teacher’s Assistant in the Noblesville, Ind., Public School Special Education Program, a volunteer at several hospitals, and worked at several retail establishments. She was an Ordained Elder and Moderator of Presbyterian Women at her church. She was Co-Director of Cast-A-Ways, a retail establishment for the sale of used merchandise with the proceeds going to her church and to needy people. She also assisted her husband in the Distribution of Surplus Food Program in the county where they lived. Reba enjoyed painting as a hobby.

Reba and her husband traveled the world and developed many fond memories of their adventures.

A graveside service will be conducted on Tuesday, September 27, 2022, at 1 p.m. at the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery located at 5550 Bagging Plant Road in Dublin, Va., with Pastor Russ Merritt officiating.
