Obituary for Phouth Chanhthavanhthong

Phouth Chanhthavanhthong, 76, of Salem, crossed over from this life to the next surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday, March 7, 2021.

Born April 15, 1944, in Vang Vieng, Laos, to his mother and father, Kou & Paeuy Chanhthavanhthong. He was the second oldest of four boys and has one sister. A graduate of the University of Dong Dok, he then went on to meet the love of his life Vansy, whom he married in 1975, and recently celebrated 45 cherished years together. During those 45 years, they have welcomed three daughters, as well as five grandchildren into this world. He served in the Laos military and was a mathematics professor for Laos Vientiane University. Phouth and Vansy were both refugees who escaped communism, bringing them to the United States in 1986. When they arrived, they had no money, but their priority was not themselves it was establishing education for his daughters and began building a life in Salem, Va. He was a proud American citizen who was ambitious, yet stubborn at times. He was no doubt a strong family man. The amount of love he had for his family was without question. Since his retirement, he and Vansy enjoyed taking trips traveling to different places, even to a few casinos at times in search of that next winning jackpot. It wasn’t uncommon to find Phouth relaxing watching sports and is remembered for him being quite competitive even when he was ill. He leaves a legacy of values in education, love, responsibility, and integrity. Phouth will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Left to honor his memory are his daughters, Nimouane Amie Keopreaseuth (Jerry), Spring Satrakoune (Johnny), and Na Picado; granddaughters, Ava Keopraseuth, Ellie Satrakoune, and Sophie Satrakoune; as well as his grandson, Nicholas Picado and Gavin Keopraseuth; also left to honor his memory are numerous other family members and dear friends.

A celebration of Phouth’s life will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, 305 Roanoke Blvd. Salem, Va. 24153. Ceremonial cremation rites will be held immediately following the service.
