Obituary for Nancy Elizabeth Spraker

Nancy Elizabeth Spraker passed to her permanent home on Sunday, January 24, 2021, after a short illness.
She was born on November 23, 1944, in Crockett, Va., the youngest of Keller U. and Lorena K. Spraker’s twelve children. She graduated from Northside High School’s first graduating class and went on to Shenandoah Conservatory of Music where she earned a Music Education degree and received her Master’s from Radford University. She worked for the Roanoke County school system for 30 plus years starting as an elementary school music teacher and then on to Northside High School as the music director. She later was an assistant principal at William Byrd High School and retired from Cave Spring Middle School. She will be remembered by many students as a hard disciplinarian but was always fair.
Her interests included her beloved home and beautiful yard and especially loved animals except those “cotton-pickin” deer when they ate her flowers and shrubbery. The latest love of her life was her little Westie, MacTavish. For many years, she volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels, working at the Salem Clothes Closet, and playing the piano for Brandon Oaks’ devotions.
She is survived by her brothers, Joe of Greenwood, Va., Harold (wife Alma) of New Market, Tenn., Larry (wife Dolores) of Crockett, Va.; and her sister, Athlyn (husband Lee Roy), of Salem. She is also survived by many loved nieces and nephews.
Brothers, Rhudolph, Charles, Toney, and Ralph; and sisters, Lucile, Laverne, and Mary preceded her in death.
Special thanks go to her dear friends, Ben and Pat Zirkle and Steve Boyer for their many acts of kindness during the past several months. She was a faithful member of College Lutheran Church where she served on many committees and as a communion assistant.
Due to the pandemic, there will be no visitation and the funeral service will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salem Animal Shelter, 1301 Indiana St., Salem 24153, or College Lutheran Church, 210 S. College Ave., Salem 24153 will be appreciated.
