Mildred Elizabeth Owens, 99, of Salem, Va., and formerly of Henderson, N.C., went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, March 19, 2020.

She was a devoted member of the Salvation Army and enjoyed ministering for the Lord all her life.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Perry and Carrie Mitchell; husband, George Aster Owens; son, Bobby Owens, Sr.; sister, Lola Mae Amos; and son-in-law, B.G. Edwards.

Her surviving family includes her children, Betty Edwards and James Owens; sister, Pauline Edwards; grandchildren, Bobby Owens, Cathy Tabor and husband, Butch, Gill Edwards, and Keith Edwards; great-grandchildren, Angie Tabor, Jason Tabor, Josh Tabor, Danielle Peterson and husband, Mike, Alan Edwards, Victoria Poff, and Drew Edwards; 5 great-great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Viola Aldridge.

Special appreciation from the family is extended to Diane Guthrie and Kindred Hospice (New Century) for the love and care provided to Mildred.

A private graveside service will be held on Thursday, March 26, 2020. A public memorial service will be conducted at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made to the Salvation Army of Henderson, N.C. Online condolences may be expressed at

Betty, Jimmy, Cathy, Gill, Keith, Danielle, Angie, Drew & Bobby and all the other family ..Your mother was such a nice lady...I remember years ago when she would come to visit you & BG next door to us she would always talk to Jack & I...she was always so kind...I pray God will keep you in His loving arms & bring you peace..Much Love ..Marcia Gibson

Ms Owens daughter Betty and I have been friends and neighbors for almost 50 years. I feel lucky to have known the whole family for so long. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.😔🙏💕🌺
