Obituary

Martha Gayle Eller Wilson went to her eternal rest on Wednesday, September 16, 2020.

She was born on Friday, February 10, 1950, to Lowell and Mildred Eller in Roanoke, Va.

Marty graduated from Bridgewater College with a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Elementary Education. She taught for several years in the Harrisonburg area before moving to Knoxville, Tenn., where her careers included education, business administration, and Workshop Leader & Event Planner. Her marriage to Rev. Barclay Wilson took her to Florida where she worked with him in a counseling and healing ministry. Moving back to Roanoke, Va., her careers included Hospice & Senior Caregiver and lately, she renewed being a Mary Kay Cosmetic Consultant. Having grown up in the Church of the Brethren, her faith in God was a large part of her life. Marty was a founding member of The Dwelling Place church in South Roanoke.

Marty loved the outdoors and nature; she was an avid birdwatcher and lover of wildflowers. She fed the birds religiously. She loved helping people - especially the lost, the lonely, and the aging. Her sense of comfort and peace made many people happy. She will be missed by many.

In addition to her husband, Rev. Wilson, Marty was predeceased by her father, Lowell Eller; her mother, Mildred Eller; and her sister, Nancy Kathryn Eller.

Surviving is her step-mother, Sarah Cromer Eller; her step-siblings, Milly Clark, Donna King (Ken), and Mark Dixon; her nieces and nephews in this family, Kim Saville (Lanny), Mckenna and Holden, Tiffany Luci (Nic), AmberLee Dixon, Erin Beard and little Declan, Zachary Beard, Lucas King, and Grace King; and step-aunt, Betty Moorman Sweat.

On her mother’s side she is survived by aunts, Catherine Huzzard and Geraldine Grubb; and many cousins including special cousin, Karen Bowman.

On her Father’s side Marty is survived by a number of cousins and their families including David Eller, Janet Eller, and Carol Eller; special friends that will miss her tremendously, Ellen Yown, Layton Manus, Linnie Philpott, Bette Hillman; and her church members at The Dwelling Place.

A celebration of Marty’s life will take place on Monday, September 28, 2020, in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem, Va., with visitation beginning at 5 p.m. and service at 6 p.m. A private burial will be held at a later date at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem, Va.

The family would welcome donations in Marty’s memory to the Eller Scholarship at Bridgewater College or the Alzheimer’s Association. Online condolences may be expressed at www.johnmoakey.com.

Martha and I lived in the same neighborhood as little kids and we graduated from WFHS together. I remember the talent and beauty pageants we use to have in her backyard. I enjoyed seeing her again at our 50th High School Reunion. A beautiful person inside and out!!! Cheer on, Martha!!!

I knew Marty through Mary Kay Skin Care/Cosmetics as she was one of my Team members years ago. Gracious, soft-spoken, and compassionate with an inner beauty that reflected her deep Faith and love of Jesus. She moved away from Orlando back to Virginia, and I lost touch with her till this year when she resumed her Mary Kay business. Her posts on FaceBook were so heart warming, showing God's majestic creation in landscape scenes and in the activities of a variety of precious birds and animals. She had a very special relationship with all of them! I always felt restored after watching her videos and pictures - like I had gone on a retreat. She was a wonderful, caring person who will be greatly missed till I see her again in Heaven. May she rest in peace in her eternal home.

Thank you, Elaine. Your sentiments are so well expressed. Marty was one of a kind . She was a great friend and was always generous with her appreciation and affirmation. My deepest sympathy to all of her family . She always brought an authenticity to the moment and her gifts are already greatly missed! I count myself blessed that we shared a friendship throughout the years because of Mary Kay Cosmetics. Marty will continue to be a great inspiration in my life ! Lucky Heaven !
