Obituary for Marie Carol "Grammy" Hurt (McLawhorn)

Marie Carol McLawhorn Hurt, age 77, passed away on Friday, October 21, 2022, at her home in Elliston, VA. Mrs. Hurt was born on July 31, 1945, to the late Lester Carol McLawhorn and Marie Gray McLawhorn. She was a graduate of Albemarle High School class of 1963. After graduating high school, she furthered her education, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1988 from Radford University in Education. She then attained her Master’s Degree in Reading. Carol married her husband of forty-five years, William Terrill Hurt, Jr., in 1964. She worked for more than twenty years as a teacher at Shawsville Middle School at Montgomery County Public Schools before retiring. In her free time, she volunteered with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America. She was an avid band booster parent representative for many years at Shawsville High School (Eastern Montgomery High School). In her earlier years, she was a youth director with her husband at Midway Baptist Church. Later in life, she was a Sunday school teacher for the ladies’ class at Seneca Baptist Church. She found enjoyment in reading, working crossword puzzles, following the Chicago Cubs baseball team, and attending the Salem Red Sox minor league baseball games. In addition to her parents and husband, she was greeted on the shores of heaven by her father-in-law, William Terrill Hurt, Sr.
Left to cherish her memory includes her daughter, Nancy Vaughn and husband, Don; sons, William Terrill Hurt, III and wife, Yvonne; and Robert Lester Hurt and wife, Bobbie-jo; grandchildren, Henry Mills (Regina), Kyle Mills, Charlie Mills, Kati Griggs (Justin), Meghan Floyd (Grant), Katie Kirsch, Matt Hurt (Lief), Avarie Kirsch, Tegan Hurt, and Taytor Hurt; great-grandchildren, Athena, Theodore, and Seraphina; brother-in-law, Richard Wheeler Hurt (Catherine); nephew, Austin (Jasmine).
Friends may visit with the family from 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday, October 26, 2022, at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, VA.
A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 27, 2022, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, VA, with her son, Minister Robert Hurt officiating. Pastor John Collins will conduct the committal service at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem following the memorial.
