Obituary for Marie Harless Hurt

Marie Harless Hurt, 87, of Salem, passed away on Tuesday, May 18, 2021, from Lewis-Gale Medical Center, in Salem.
She leaves behind her 4 children, daughter, Bonnie Sabitini (Nick) of Florida, son, Ronnie Hurt (Sandra) of Vinton, Va., daughter, Pam Smith of Roanoke, Va., and son, Sam Hurt of Salem, Va.; grandchildren, Seth (Alisha), Stephanie (Dillon), Alli (Todd), and Sammy; 7 great-grandchildren, Hayden, Brendyn, Weston, Vonn Richard, Jillian, Cassidy Hope, and Madeline Marie.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Roy Samuel and Nancy Tickle Harless; her loving husband of 68 years, Richard Zirkle Hurt; brothers, Seab and J.R. Harless; and baby sister, Peggy Harless.

Known by her family as “The Boss,” Marie was the family rock. She kept everyone in line and well taken care of and they always knew what was expected from her. She had a gentle and kind nature about her but, could also hold her own when needed. She was certainly well loved for her cooking and baking and was extremely talented and creative with things most people would consider scrap. Marie could turn an old wooden stump into a rustic masterpiece that loved ones could enjoy over time. Her taste in clothing was simple however, everything had to match and go well with red lipstick. She was well known for trips to Goodwill to find a bargain. Marie enjoyed working outside in the yard, tending to her flowers, and her bird feeders, but the thing that will be remembered most to those who knew her best was her love for family. Nothing in this world mattered more to her than the her family. Her legacy and the memories shared will last for generations to come.

In honoring the wishes of her family, a private graveside honoring Marie’s life will be conducted at Sherwood Memorial Park, in Salem.

The family wishes to thank their lifetime of friends for the love shared with them over Marie’s lifetime.
