Obituary for Larry Looney

Larry Looney, 69, of Salem, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, April 23, 2021.

Larry was born in 1952 in rural Southwest Virginia in the coal fields of Grundy, VA. He was raised to work, take care of his family and praise God. During his life he spent 52 years as a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He also devoted many hours helping to shape boys into young men.

While on this earth, he was employed by Island Creek Coal Company for over 22 years. He served as a coach at Russell Prater and Vansant Elementary Schools, and Grundy High School. He was a member of Vansant Baptist Church.

Those that knew Larry, knew that he had love to give. His time was his greatest gift, and those that received his time, received more, his friendship, his sense of humor and his love for God.

His special achievements were not measured in awards but measured in his devotion to you as a person and in his devotion to God.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Dale Looney; his son, Larry Brad Looney and his wife Lorraine, and three grandchildren, Nikki, Tristan and Bradley.

A funeral service will be held at 1PM, Thursday, April 29, 2021 at the Chapel of John M. Oakey & Son, Salem. Pastor Stan Parris will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Social distancing will be observed, and masks are required while in the funeral home. Larry will be laid to rest at 11AM on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at Parrot Deel Cemetery in Haysi, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Franklin Heights Baptist Church 110 Hilltop Dr. Rocky Mount, VA 24151 or to CommUNITY Church 1923 E. Main St. Salem, VA 24153.
