Obituary for Kathleen Brent Smith (Brent)

Kathleen “Kathy” Smith (formerly Brent) was born June 13th, 1921, in Kingston, Jamaica. She was the youngest of 6 children and the only girl. Kathy and her mother Lesle emigrated to the US through Ellis Island in 1930. Kathy was close to her brother Adrian and enjoyed holidays with the family in New Jersey; she would call NY her home until June 2016.
Kathy worked in Manhattan and even commuted to the city from Long Island until she was in her late 70’s, unwilling to leave her then boss, who was almost blind. After moving to Long Island, Kathy was enamored with her garden, enjoyed her neighbors, and was thrilled to have purchased a home after so many years of apartment living in Queens. It was in her Long Island community that Kathy met her 3rd and beloved husband George Smith. Kathy and George enjoyed music, laughter and Hollywood movies together. As Kathy said, “we didn’t plan for death. We just thought we might live forever.” Soon after Mr. Smith’s death at age 98, Kathy joined her niece and family in Virginia.
It was Kathy’s fervent hope that she would find the peace she sought these last few years in Heaven, with all the loved ones she outlived. Kathy was a strong woman with a loving heart who knew what she wanted and how she wanted it.
A celebration of her life will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 12, 2021, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, VA, with Rev. Robin Williamson officiating.
Attendee’s are asked to wear a face mask, as well as, use of safe social distancing.
Kathy your spirit is missed. Love and peace to you in your forever home in Heaven.
