Jerry Lee Akers passed away on Friday, November 13, 2020, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, with his beloved wife, Vickie Maxey Akers at his side.

Jerry was born on May 2, 1955 in Roanoke, Virginia to the late Gordon L. and Julia O. Akers.

He graduated from Alleghany District High School, Shawsville, VA, in 1972, and hired out with Norfolk and Western Railway in 1973, continuing there as a machinist until his retirement in 2015.

Jerry was a hotrod enthusiast who loved travelling to car shows up and down the east coast. In earlier days, he raced his own dragster at regional strips.

He loved to play the guitar with the Praise Team at Riverside Evangelical and at Salem Health and Rehabilitation Center. He enjoyed relaxing with his feline friend, Kitty, who liked to curl up behind his head and snuggle on a hard day.

Jerry never met a stranger and his friends will remember him for his kindness in thought, word, and deed.

In addition to his wife of 32 years, Jerry leaves behind his son, Jesse Akers of Porto, Portugal; brothers and sisters-in-law Lynn and Sandy Akers, of Salem, and Chuck Akers and Lisa Stoneman, of Roanoke; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends on Monday, November 16, 2020, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., at Riverside Evangelical Methodist Church, in Salem.

A celebration of Jerry’s life will be held on Tuesday, November 17, 2020, at 2 p.m., at Riverside Evangelical Methodist Church, with Pastor Brian Gordon officiating.

To The Akers Family, We are sorry to learn of your loss of Jerry, may God bless all of you during this difficult time and as always
cherish all of your wonderful memories of him. Julia, was so proud of all of her boys and what they had accomplished as they became adults. Just now that you will see him again over there, God be with each of you in the coming days, months and years as you do forward. Vickie, I really enjoyed the video as so much thought was put into it, thank you for sharing with us.

Vicki, I am so sorry you are going thru this. Lynn, Jerry and Chuck and I use to go to grandma Akers house and see our grandmother and be in her little kitchen. We played ball in Gordon and Judy's back yard. Then we all grew up and went our separate ways and got back together later in life getting to know each other. I am praying for you.

I will not leave you comfortless, I will come to you. John 14:18

We know where Jerry is. Probably just signed up to play the guitar in the heavenly band. He will be missed but it is comforting knowing he is in the presence of the lord. Jerry was a good man and a great friend. Kim and I will miss him. Condolences to his wonderful wife Vicki and his family.
