Obituary for James Lester Palmer

James L. Palmer, 70, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 24, 2020.

A loving and cherished husband, father, and grandfather, he left a legacy for his family to carry on of sincere values, and American pride. As a proud marine corps veteran, Jimmy served his country with a full heart and pride. His military service was his motivation and lived by the statement “once a marine, always a marine”. A lifelong resident of Salem, it was not uncommon for you to see Jimmy out and about with his marine ball cap on and being a light to all who he would meet.

He is preceded by his mother, Ruby Kate Palmer.

Left to cherish his memory are his father, John Randolph Palmer; loving wife of 46 years, Patty Beaty Palmer; children, Candy Palmer Butcher, and Christie Palmer Hudson; siblings, David R. Palmer and wife Karen R. Palmer, Elizabeth E. Palmer, and Martha P. Ellis; grandchildren, Hannah E. Butcher, Logan J. Butcher, and Zachary T. Subtyl; also left to cherish his memory are numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

A celebration of Jimmy’s Life will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2020, from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. in an outdoor gathering at his childhood home, located at 713 Florida Street, Salem, Virginia 24153. The family will hold a private memorial service on Thursday, October 29, 2020, at the House of Prayer in Roanoke.
