Obituary for Jack Whetsol Cochran Sr.

Jack Whetsol Cochran, Sr, age 88 of Salem, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Friday, November 18, 2022. Born to the late Dorsey Whetsol and Pauline Foutz Cochran. In addition to his parents, Jack is preceded in death by his son, Jack Whetsol Cochran, Jr.

Jack worked for Shenandoah Life as the second VP for 36 years. When he started, he worked in the mail room and worked his way up the ladder. Jack took a very positive outlook on life. He contracted polio at age 7. This however did not stop him. He took to throwing the baseball to help combat his polio symptoms. He had such an amazing curve ball that no one could hit it and I mean no one. He played for the semi-pro league locally and was once approached by a baseball scout. He told Jack that if he did not contract polio at such a young age he would be playing in the pros. With Jack’s positive outlook his response was, “I wouldn’t have known baseball without polio”.

Left to cherish in his memory, loving wife of 69 years, Barbara Wertz Cochran; daughter, Anne Kiser, and husband, Patrick; grandchildren, Aaron Cochran and wife, Gillian, Kellan Cochran and wife, Karen, Grayson Kiser; and 2 great-granddaughters.

Family members and friends may gather together for a period of visitation on Sunday, December 4, 2022, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home.
