Dawn Rae Ferrebee-Hawks, 47, of Salem, passed away on Friday, June 5, 2020, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Dawn was a special kind of person, she walked to the beat of her own drum, and had no issue letting you know just what was on her mind. Her laugh was infectious, her sense of humor though sometimes dark, would have you laughing hysterically before you knew it. She was always referred to as the “Cool Mom”, she wore that title proudly, as was the true definition of the term “Momma Bear”. Being the selfless person that she was, she put the needs of others around her before her own without hesitation. It was a well-known fact around the pool halls and Las Vegas tournaments, that if you wanted a good challenge in a game of pool, she was sure to give you your monies worth trying to beat her. As life went on, she was faced with multiple bouts of cancer. She never gave up, never voiced a complaint of pain, and fought without fear. She won her battles and is now at peace. Dawn will be missed dearly by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Christine Ferrebee.
Left to cherish her memory, are her father, Dale Ferrebee Sr.; a loving husband of almost four years, David Hawks; children, Crystal Pelter (Ari), Ashley Pelter (Josh), and Justin Pelter; sisters, Julie Taylor (Rex) and Holly Hunt Owen; as well as her brother, Dale Ferrebee Jr. (Monica); also left to cherish her memory are numerous other family members and dear friends.
A celebration of Dawn’s life will be held at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in our chapel, Saturday, June 13, 2020, from 2 to 2:30 p.m. The family will receive friends immediately following the service from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. Rev. Ben Mewald will be officiating.
