Obituary for Charles Kuyk "Kirk" Aderholt

“Kirk” Aderholt (aka “Grumps”) – lover of nature, teller of stories, and quite a character – passed away June 10, 2021, at his home in Indian Valley (Floyd County), Virginia, surrounded by his loving family. He was 77.

Born during the winter of 1944 in Richmond, Virginia to Charles and Emily Aderholt, Kirk grew up in Hopewell, Virginia where the Appomattox River flows into the James River. His river roots served him well during his six years in the U.S. Navy and provided countless years of enjoyment since he loved every type of fishing and boating.
Kirk wore many hats as a valued employee in various industries. His longest tenures were with the City of Hopewell (electrical inspector) and the Department of the Army (Fort Lee – civilian in the Energy Management department – 30 years before retiring in 2010). Other than his sporting hobbies (fishing and hunting), he derived great joy from cooking, decoy carving (intricate), drawing, and landscaping with his well-used John Deere tractor.

He is survived by his loving wife, Paige (“Omi”), his daughter, Hilary Warthan (Chad), a son through marriage, Scott Stevenson (Lori), four grandsons (Warthan-Colin, Cayden and Colsen, Stevenson-Adam), one great-granddaughter (Autumn Stevenson), sisters Melissa Smith and Suzanne Sebenaler (Brian), Aunt Renate Platt, and a host of cousins. Two cousins were very much like siblings to Kirk (Jim Enochs and Linda Leadbetter Pomfrey).
Survivors also include nieces Kristin Spivey, Elizabeth Westbank, and Hannah Sebenaler, and two grandnieces (Allison and Sarah Westbank). Mr. Aderholt was preceded in death by his parents, over two dozen aunts and uncles, several cousins, and special pets. Sailor, his beloved Chesapeake Bay Retriever, has no doubt wagged his tail ever since he and Kirk were reunited.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, October 9th at Weston Manor in Hopewell (overlooking the Appomattox River).

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to your favorite charity would make Kirk smile!

The family wishes to express its deepest gratitude to family friend and hospice nurse, Susan, who was incredibly attentive and kind.
