Obituary for Barbara Jean Glass (Martin)

Barbara M. Glass, 86, of Salem, VA, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 1, 2021. She was born on Monday, February 25, 1935, to the late Cam Tazewell Martin and Ruth Stump Martin in the Glenvar area of Roanoke County. Barbara was a charter member of the Fort Lewis Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, where she served as past President and secretary at various times throughout her tenure. She was instrumental in the Fort Lewis Parent Teacher Association, where she also served as past President. Her civic duties also lead her to become a past President of the Fort Lewis Lions Club. She was a member of Faith Wesleyan Church where she was also a part of the Wesleyan Women Ministry. Barbara was active in the Alzheimer’s Association for several years. Most recently she was President of the Resident Council at Richfield Recovery and Care Center. In addition to her parents she was greeted in her eternal home by her maternal grandparents, Leonard Allen Stump and Sylvia Stump Otey; paternal grandparents, James Thomas and Martha A. Martin; her loving husband of 67 years, Harrison Glass; brother, Jimmy Martin; special aunt, Nina Saul.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Michael Glass and wife, Bonnie, Anne Paitsel and husband, David, Ronnie Glass, James Glass, and Becky Ayers and husband, Justin; grandchildren, Steven Paitsel and wife, Amanda, Sylvia Paitsel, Jase and Ryan Ayers, Steven Palmer and wife, Stephanie, Daren Crockett, Amanda Glass, and Kayla Lilly and husband, Will; great - grandchildren, Leia Lovelace, Makala Scott, Ryleigh and Alysa Paitsel, and Karen Lilly; sisters, Martha Thomas and Sandra Dawley; sister-in-law, Marion Martin; special cousins, Dale Saul and wife, Brownie, and Billy Saul and wife, Marie; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family would like to thank the Staff at Richfield for the years of care and friendships she gained. They would also like to thank Dr. Keeley for dedication to her care over the last three weeks and the staff of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, March 5, 2021, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, VA. with Pastors JR Shelor, Dan Netting, and George Lerue teaming forces to celebrate her homegoing. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Roanoke, VA, with Steve Paitsel, Steve Palmer, Daniel Ayers, Justin Ayers, Daniel Hallman, and James Martin, Jr. serving as pallbearers. The service will be broadcast live on the funeral home’s website underneath the obituary.
Friends may visit with the family from 10 AM until the service hour at the funeral home.
Those attending the service and visitation are asked to wear an appropriate face covering and practice proper social distance.
