Obituary for Arthur Clifton Price Sr.

Arthur Clifton Price, 82, of Salem, Va., passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, December 3, 2022.

Arthur was born and raised in Roanoke, Va. to the late Elsie and Robert Price. He attended Jefferson High School, where he earned all-state honors as a member of the football team. It was during this time that he went on a blind date and met the love of his life, Joan. Arthur and Joan were married for 60 years, and they made the most of every minute. Arthur loved Joan with all of his heart and took great delight in making her happy.

Stories from Arthur’s childhood were plentiful and entertaining. He was mischievous, but in an all-American boy way. After graduation, Arthur played football for Hargrave Military Academy and Emory and Henry College. He held many jobs over the years, including serving our country in the U.S. Marine Corps, business owner, ACC football referee, salesman, and even school bus driver. He was creative, which often showed up in the form of a prank. Arthur was a true gentleman and family man and he made sure those around him knew how much he cared for them. He loved fishing and hunting, especially when he was able to share those experiences with Arthur Jr. and Jason.

Arthur raised his boys to be strong, humble, and followers of Christ. He led by example in his own quiet way. He was a big part of his grandkids’ lives and never missed a ballgame or event that they were participating in. As a parent and grandparent, he delighted in being there for the small things, that over time actually became the big things we remember.

Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, Elsie and Robert Price; son, Jason Price; and grandson, Gavin Price.

In addition to his wife, Joan, Arthur is survived by his sister, Jean Thorne (Harley); brother, Robert Price Jr. (Lillian); son, Arthur Price, Jr. (Becky); daughter-in-law, Susan Price (Jason); his grandkids, Conner, Parker, and Keegan; his loyal companion, Rascal; and many special nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Arthur’s life will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2022, in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem, Va. A period of visitation will begin at 10 a.m. with a service following at 11 a.m. He will be laid to rest at East Hill Cemetery.
