Obituary for Arthur Ronald "Ron" Harrell

Arthur “Ron” Harrell, 69, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 20, 2020.

Ron was a loving, kind, and generous man, who often spent his days rocking in his rocking chair with a cup of coffee in hand, people watching with a big smile on his face. It was no secret to anyone that he was true to his faith in the Lord and knew The Bible cover to cover. He was not only a dedicated Christian, but was also a genuinely loving husband, father, and grandfather. His family was his world and took every opportunity he could find to remind them how much he loved them. A hard-working man, he was employed by Koppers as a machine operator, and retired after many years of service. When it came to sports, you could find him in front of the television rooting for his favorite team the Pittsburgh Penguins. In the off season he would have a fishing rod in his hand or would be out enjoying nature walking his dog Lilly.

Ron is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Boose and Sarah Harrell; three sisters, Negatha Shumate, Frances Hammons, and Dorothy Henderson; as well as his brother, Thomas Harrell.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 32 years, Donna Harrell; daughters, April Cofer, and Amanda Bennett (Daniel); brother, James Harrell; sister, Wanda Holt; granddaughter, Lyla Grace Bennett; and last but not least his special friend David Hart.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 22, 2020 from 6 to 7 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home Chapel. He will be laid to rest at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2020 at Cedar Lawn Burial Park in Roanoke. Pastor Ben Mewald will be officiating. It is requested that facial coverings be worn by those planning to attend services, as well as practice social distancing.
