Obituary for Lucy Jean Caldwell Huffman (Caldwell)

Lucy Jean Caldwell Huffman, 74, of Salem, Va. passed away on Monday, July 8, 2019. She was born on August 19, 1944, to the late Jesse and Ruth Francisco Caldwell in Catawba, Va. On February 2, 1962, during her senior year of high school, Lucy joined Leonard E. Huffman in marriage that would last a total 54 years before his passing on September 19, 2016. In 1966, Lucy started a distinguished career of over 30 years at Stuart McGuire, later to become Home Shopping Network. She ended her years there as supervisor of the Salem Support Group for the Home Shopping Mail Order Division. After leaving HSN, Lucy had a second career at First Citizens Bank, retiring in 2006 as an Area Supervisor. According to those who knew and worked with her, Lucy was a true master at customer service. After retiring, Lucy and Leonard set off in their camper on their cross-country dream trip; they traveled and camped at different locations throughout the country which was their favorite pass time. In the winter months, Lucy and Leonard became snowbirds and traveled to their second home at Clerbrook Golf and RV Resort in Clermont, Fl. In her free time, she enjoyed crafts and gardening. Lucy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend to all; and will be deeply missed. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her brother, Steve Caldwell; nephew, Casey Jones; and special aunt, Thelma Epperly.
Those left to cherish her memory include her fiancé, Ryland B. Hogan; missing daughter, Joan R. Cook; daughter, Carol H. Byer and husband, Nicky; granddaughters, Allison Spradlin and Ashlyn Cook; grandsons, Cohen and Chatham Byer; great-grandchildren, Noah, Kailee, Brooklyn and Isabella; sisters, Noline Jones and husband, Fredrick, Wanda Jones, and Joyce Horne and husband, Randall; close niece who was more like a sister, Vickie Francisco; special friends, Diane Beason and Sandra Hunt; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, neighborhood friends, the “Overnite” gang, friends at Clerbrook Golf and RV Resort, and her constant canine companion, Hank.
A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 12, 2019, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, Va. with Rev. Dr. John Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
Friends may visit with the family from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, July 11, 2019, at the funeral home.
