Obituary for Dr. Walter Asbury Gold, D.D.S.

Dr. Walter Asbury Gold, D.D.S. passed away on May 27, 2019, in Salem, VA at the age of 74.
Walter is survived by his Children, Benjamin Thomas Gold of Charlotte, NC; Daniel Pharis Gold (his wife Maggie) of Kula, HI; and Christian Asbury Gold (his wife Scarlett) of Atlanta, GA; five grandchildren, Ryan, Tanner, Landon, Reese, Sadie; one brother, Thomas Byron Gold III; his niece Ginny Gold and nephew Thomas Byron Gold IV.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Byron Gold, II and Marjorie Alice Gold; and his sister, Alice Gold Curtis.
Walter was born on August 24th in Shelby, NC to Thomas Byron Gold, II and Marjorie Alice Gold. He graduated from Wake Forest University in 1966 with a degree of Bachelor of Science. He furthered his education by attending Virginia Commonwealth University Medical College of Virginia and graduated in 1970 with a degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery. Walter trained as an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon at the Medical College of Virginia, finishing in 1973. After moving to Roanoke, Va., Walter opened his practice in 1973 and practiced until his retirement in 2013. Over 44 years his family welcomed three children into their lives. His children remember him as a strong, loving and generous father who encouraged them to pursue their dreams and goals.
Walter was a member of the Roanoke Valley Dental Society, Virginia Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (and served as president), and American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He was a “Life Member” of the Virginia Dental Association, which he served for 48 years. Walter was a board member of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra and served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for Hunting Hills Country Club.

A celebration of his life with friends and family will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2019, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, VA, 305 Roanoke Blvd. Salem, VA., between the hours of 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm.
