Obituary for Genevieve Marie Tarpley (Cuddy)

Genevieve Cuddy Tarpley, 94, of Salem, passed away Thursday, October 11, 2018.

Genevieve was born in Eden, North Carolina on October 3, 1924 to Edgar and Birdie Cuddy. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Carrie Doran; her brother, Artie Cuddy, and her husband Crippen Tarpley. She moved to Roanoke, Virginia as a teenager and graduated from William Fleming High School. She was voted most talented in her senior class for her artistic abilities. She was friendly and gregarious, and had a contagious laugh. During WWII, Genevieve worked for the telephone company in Roanoke. After the war, she worked for Shenandoah Life Insurance Company in Roanoke.

On June 19, 1948, she married William Crippen Tarpley, and settled in Salem, Virginia where they raised three children and owned and operated Tarpley’s Inc. Along with her daughter Susan, Genevieve helped manage the jewelry and gift store, and was one of the buyers for the business.

Genevieve was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Salem, where she produced and directed the movie, “The Story of Paul.” The movie was shown in numerous Methodist churches. Genevieve taught Sunday school, Bible school, and was a Brownie Scout leader. She was also a member of the Junior Women’s Club and Friendship Garden Club where she served as president.

She had the voice of an angel, and had the privilege of singing in weddings, the church choir, and numerous events. Even in her nineties, she continued to sing in a choir at the Hermitage in Roanoke.

Her culinary talents were appreciated by many which led to an opportunity to cater a wedding. Her family will always have fond memories of her homemade rolls, beautifully decorated cakes, and spectacular Thanksgiving feasts. In her spare time, she loved playing bridge with her friends, and traveling with her husband Crippen to locations around the globe.

Genevieve is survived by her daughters, Susan White and husband Robert of Greenville, SC, Ann Francesco of Concord, NC; son, David Tarpley and wife Wanda of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Jenny and Robin Tarpley, Jeffrey Tarpley and wife Susie, Carrie Winesett and husband Doug, Courtney and Matthew Francesco; great-grandchildren, Caroline Paz, Marin and Brynn Tarpley, and Patrick Winesett.

Genevieve was a loving mother and grandmother, and a devoted wife. She will be greatly missed.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude for the care she received at the Joe C. Thomas Center at Richfield in Salem, and the Hermitage in Roanoke. A special thank you to members of First United Methodist Church and close friends for their support and visits.

Visitation will be held Monday, October 15, 2018 from 10 to 11 AM at the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son, Salem with services beginning at 11 AM. Rev. Bobby Pickle will officiate.
