Obituary for John Carroll Shifflett

April 18, 1946 – November 26, 2017. John Carroll Shifflett, 71, passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2017 at the Virginia Veterans Care Center in Salem, Virginia where he resided since May of this year. He was born at home, with Nettie Conley (deceased) as midwife, in west Rockingham County to Norman C. Shifflett and Myrtle Morris Shifflett (deceased).
John’s life was filled with successes in the things he loved. He was an avid hunter and made many trips to British Columbia, Canada where he earned special recognition for his trophies from the Boone and Crockett Preservation Club. He also loved horses and frequently rode his Tennessee walker stallion in local parades.
At age 18, John was drafted into the U.S. Army. As a soldier, he served in Vietnam and achieved the rank of Sergeant. He was awarded several medals including expert badge/rifle bar and marksman (pistol .45 cal). John suffered from severe posttraumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) for the remainder of his life.
John leaves a daughter, Lisa Senic, of Elkins, West Virginia. Left to grieve him is a dear friend, Linda Caplinger; two sisters, Peggy Shifflett, of Salem, VA; Brenda Rhodes, of Rockingham, VA; and brother, Warnie Shifflett, of Rockingham, VA. One brother, Larry Shifflett, predeceased John. He enjoyed the company of his many nieces and nephews throughout his life. He passed his hunting and fishing skills on to them.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 9, at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Family visitation will be from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. with the service starting at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Clover Hill Fire Department, 2100 Clover Hill Rd., Dayton, VA 22821.
