Dave
Vanderpool, Director
Dave has served families at John M. Oakey & Son since
2002. He was born in Waynesboro, Va. and moved to Salem with his
parents when he was just two weeks old. He graduated from Salem High
School in 1990, earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Religion from
Southern Wesleyan University in 1994, and received an ordination certificate
from The Wesleyan Church in 1996. Dave served as a full-time assistant
pastor for eight years. During his ministry, however, Dave pondered
over his passion for funeral service that began even as a teenager. It
was in 2002 that Dave began directing his compassion toward funeral service
and joined the John M. Oakey & Son staff as a resident trainee. He
studied mortuary science at John Tyler Community College, was awarded an
Associate in Applied Science Degree with a major in Funeral Services in
2005, and received his funeral director's license in February of 2006.
Dave thoroughly enjoys all aspects of funeral service and considers his
involvement in it not as an occupation but as a calling. He and his
wife, Beth, live in Salem with their two children, Jillian and Dawson.
He is a member of Salem Wesleyan Church, where he continues to work as a
part-time student pastor. He is also a member of the National Funeral
Directors’ Association as well as a charter member of the Civitan Club of

Lynn
Deel, Office Manager
Lynn
has worked at the funeral home as the business office bookkeeper since 2004.
She is a lifelong
Roanoke
Valley
resident, graduating from
Cave
Spring
High School
in 1984 and
Roanoke
College
in 1988 and 1993. She brings with her over 12 years of customer service
experience and a devotion to making sure that our customers receive the best
of care and the extra help they need with details during a difficult time.
Lynn
’s parents, Jim and Lula Deel, have been an integral and colorful part of
the working community of
Salem
since the early 1980’s: Jim as a car salesman for 25 years and Lula as a
beautician for over 30 years. After losing her father to cancer in 1994, she
was impressed with the care shown by the staff of John M. Oakey & Son,
especially the now-traditional “plate of chicken”. She spends much of
her spare time with her daughter, Sierrah, taking care of fish, cats and a
soon-to-be-puppy, going to movies, reading, walking and attending church
locally at Salem Presbyterian.

Jeff Wolfe,
Funeral Service Intern
Born in Marion, VA I grew up around funeral work as
I used to travel to work with my dad on the weekends and helped him
with such things as grave site preparation, setting tents and such. At
the age of eight I lost my dad to heart disease and at that moment I
learned what death really meant, and how one person’s gentle touch
could make a difference. My dad’s long time friend and co-worker Ken
Sheets placed his hand on my shoulder while standing at my dads
casket, and although I realized that he was my dads friend, I also
realize now that this was one of the reasons it made him an
outstanding funeral director and embalmer. Ken truly cares for the
families he serves, and only wants to help them the best way he can
with closure and dealing with the loss they have suffered. I took this
same passion at the age of 18 when I started my own journey in the
business and became employed with the same funeral home, as I started
off only working visitations to eventually working funerals, digging
and servicing grave sites, assisting in the embalming room and making
removals. Although at this point I am still unlicensed and currently
only employed as a part time employee with John M. Oakey & Son, it
is my long term dream and conviction to one day complete the licensing
requirements and become a full time funeral director and fulfill my
passion and calling to help others the same way Ken helped myself and
so many others. Jeff Wolfe |
