Dr. Walter Akers Hunt
Dr. Walter Akers Hunt, 78, of
Salem
,
VA
passed away Sunday, May 25, 2008.
He was born December 15, 1929 in Franklin County, VA son of the
late William Benjamin and Donie Jane Brown Hunt.
He was also preceded in death by siblings, Irene Hunt Tudor, Wilson
Hunt, Margaret Hunt Love, Maurice Hunt and James Hunt.
Dr. Hunt retired in 1989 as the Superintendent of Salem Schools,
was a member of
First
United
Methodist
Church
in
Salem
and served as treasurer of the United Methodist Men. He
was a member and past President of
Salem
Lions Club where he served as Secretary and Treasurer for many years.
Walter graduated from the
College
of
William
and Mary, where he earned his BS in 1950 and his masters degree in
Educational Administration in 1957. He
graduated from Virginia Tech in 1973 with his Doctorate in Educational
Administration. In 1951, he
joined the Virginia National Guard and began a term of service that would
last 14 years and see him rise to the rank of captain.
He was president of the Salem Educational Foundation and Alumni
Association. He was a member
of the Virginia Western Community College Board, was a member of the Salem
Bank and Trust Board from 1981 until 2004 and served as Director of FNB
Corporation from 2002 to 2003. He
is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Avis Cline Hunt; son, William
Michael Hunt; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Curtis Burchett;
grandchildren, Cody, Kelsey and Ryan Burchett; sisters, Ruby Bell Hunt,
Ethel Hunt Love, Paige Hunt Robertson, Lucille Hunt Willis and husband,
Wilfred and Dorothy Hunt Webb and husband, Donnie; sisters-in-law, Ruby
Brooks Hunt and Cova Nichols Hunt; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 28,
2008 at
First
United
Methodist
Church
with Dr. Michael Houff officiating. Interment
will follow at
Sherwood
Memorial Park
,
Salem
. The family will
receive friends Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at John M. Oakey and
Son,
Salem
. In lieu of flowers memorial
contributions may be made in Dr. Hunt’s name to:
First
United
Methodist
Church
Building
fund or Salem Educational Foundation and Alumni Association.
