In Loving Memory of

Lorraine Hedwig Johnston

Lorraine H. Johnston, 91, of Salem died Tuesday, June 3, 2008 in the Richfield Recovery and Care Center in Salem .  She was born Sept. 9, 1916 in Chicago , IL .  She was the third of four children born to the late Adolph Piff and Hedwig Wirtz of Chicago and was the beloved wife of the late Robert F Johnston.  Lorraine was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where she loved to sing in the choir, teach Sunday School, children in Primary and Relief Society classes.  She also played the piano and was a chorister in the Relief Society.  Lorraine studied for a time at Northwestern University to be a secretary and was a good one.  She worked for Swift & Co, Meat Packers, International Packers, & Keiser Engineers as an executive secretary for a total of twenty five years.  She was a charter member of the Professional Women’s Club while working as a secretary.  She would often make calls to foreign countries and was called upon at times to speak a little Spanish, French or German.  She retired from this position in 1982 when she and her husband moved to Salem , VA.    She lived 16 years on Kingsmill Dr in Salem and then moved to a cottage in the Richfield community of Salem .  In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her two brothers and sister.  Lorraine is survived by three step-children and was blessed with many good friends who will miss her dearly.   Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, June 6, 2008 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Salem with Bishop Bill Brown, Jr. officiating.  Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park .  Visitation will be held Thursday evening 6 to 8 p.m. at John M.
